Introduction to Petition

Petition 3.0 | KJV

Of the Third Part of Prayer, which is Petition and Supplication for the Good Things which I Stand in Need of.

Having opened the wounds of sin, both the guilt of it and the power of it, and its remainders in us, we must next seek unto God for the remedy, for healing and help, for from him alone it is to be expected, and this also he will let us ask him to do for us. Ezekiel 36:37(KJV) And now we must affect our hearts with a deep sense of the need we have of those mercies which we pray for, that we are undone, forever undone, without them; and, with a high esteem and value for them, that we are happy, we are made forever, if we obtain them; that we may like Jacob wrestle with him in prayer, as for our lives and the lives of our souls. But we must not think in our prayers to prescribe to him or by our importunity to move him. He knows us better than we know ourselves and knows what he will do. John 6:6(KJV) But thus, we open our wants and desires, and then refer ourselves to his wisdom and goodness; and hereby we give honor to him as our Protector and Benefactor, and take the way which he himself has appointed, of fetching in mercy from him, and by faith plead his promise with him: And if we are sincere in this, we are, through his grace, qualified according to the tenor of the new covenant to receive his favors, and are to be assured that we do and shall receive them. Mark 11:24(KJV)

And now, Lord, what wait I for? truly my hope is even in thee. Deliver me from all my transgressions, that I may no more be the reproach of the foolish. Psalm 39:7-8(KJV)

Lord, all my desire is before thee, and my groaning is not hid from thee, Psalm 38:9(KJV) even the groanings which cannot be uttered, for, he that searcheth the heart knows what is the mind of the Spirit. Romans 8:26-27(KJV)

I do not think that I shall be heard for my much speaking, for my Father knows what things I have need of before I ask him; Matthew 6:7-8(KJV) but my Master hath told me that whatsoever I ask the Father in his name, he will give it me. And he hath said, Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. John 16:23-24(KJV)

And this is the confidence that I have in him, that if I ask any thing according to his will, he heareth me; and if I know that he hears me, whatsoever I ask, I know that I have the petitions I desired of him. 1 John 5:14-15(KJV)

Humbly Profess your Sorrow and Shame for Sin

Confession 2.20 | KJV

I must humbly profess my sorrow and shame for sin, and humbly engage myself in the strength of divine grace, that I will be better and do better for the future.

Lord, I repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, Matthew 3:2(KJV) to which thou hast exalted thy Son Christ Jesus, to give repentance and remission of sins. Acts 5:31(KJV)

I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now my eyes see thee; wherefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes; Job 42:5-6(KJV) therefore will I be like a dove of the valley, mourning for my iniquities. Ezekiel 7:16(KJV)

O that my head were waters, and my eyes fountains of tears, that I might weep day and night for my transgressions, Jeremiah 9:1(KJV) and might in such a manner sow in those tears as that at last I may reap in joy; may now go forth weeping, bearing precious seed, and may in due time come again with rejoicing, bringing in my sheaves with me. Psalm 126:5-6(KJV)

My iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me; Psalm 38:4(KJV) but weary and heavy laden under this burden, I come to Christ, who has promised that in him I shall find rest to my soul. Matthew 11:28(KJV)

O knowing the plague of my own heart, 1 Kings 8:38(KJV) may I look unto him whom I have pierced, and may I mourn and be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for a first-born. Zechariah 12:10(KJV) That I may sorrow after a godly sort, with that sorrow which worketh repentance unto salvation, not to be repented of; 2 Corinthians 7:10(KJV) and that I may remember and be confounded and never open my mouth any more because of my shame, when thou art pacified toward me. Ezekiel 16:63(KJV)

And, O that I may bring forth fruits meet for repentance! Matthew 3:8(KJV) and may never return again to folly; Psalm 85:8(KJV) for what have I to do any more with idols? Hosea 14:8(KJV) Sin shall not have dominion over me, for I am not under the law but under grace. Romans 6:14(KJV)

I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant, for I do not forget thy commandments. Psalm 119:176(KJV)

Give Glory to God for His Patience and Willingness to be Reconciled

Confession 2.19 | KJV

I must give to God the glory of his patience and long-suffering towards me and his willingness to be reconciled.

O the riches of the patience and forbearance of God! Romans 2:4(KJV) How long-suffering is he towards me, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9(KJV)

Thou hast not dealt with me according to my sin, nor rewarded me after my iniquities, Psalm 103:10(KJV) but thou waitest to be gracious to me. Isaiah 30:18(KJV)

Sentence against my evil works has not been executed speedily, Ecclesiastes 8:11(KJV) but thou hast given me space to repent and make my peace with thee, Revelation 2:21(KJV) and callest even backsliding children, such as myself, to return to thee and hast promised to heal my backslidings; and therefore, behold I come unto thee, for thou art the Lord my God. Jeremiah 3:22(KJV)

Surely the long-suffering of my Lord is salvation; 2 Peter 3:15(KJV) and if the Lord had been pleased to kill me, he would not as at this time have showed me such things as these. Judges 13:23(KJV)

And O that this goodness of God might lead me to repentance! Romans 2:4(KJV) For though I have trespassed against my God, yet now there is hope for me in Israel concerning this thing. Ezra 10:2(KJV)

Thou hast said it and hast confirmed it with an oath, that thou hast no pleasure in the death of sinners like me, but rather desire that I should turn and live. Ezekiel 33:11(KJV) Therefore will I rend my heart, and not my garment, and turn to the Lord my God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. Who knows if he will return and repent and leave a blessing behind him? Joel 2:13-14(KJV)

Understand the Condemning Nature of your Sin

Confession 2.18 | KJV

I must judge and condemn myself for my sins, and own myself liable to punishment.

And now, O my God, what shall I say after this, for I have forsaken thy commandments? Ezra 9:10(KJV) I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of man? Job 7:20(KJV)

I know that the law curseth every one that continues not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them; Galatians 3:10(KJV) that the wages of every sin is death; Romans 6:23(KJV) and that for these things’ sake the wrath of God cometh upon the children of disobedience. Ephesians 5:6(KJV)

And I am guilty before God; Romans 3:19(KJV) the Scripture hath concluded me under sin; Galatians 3:22(KJV) and therefore thou mightest justly be angry with me, till thou hadst consumed me, so that I should neither be of your remnant nor able to escape. Ezra 9:14(KJV)

If thou shouldest lay righteousness to the line and judgment to the plummet, Isaiah 28:17(KJV) thou mightest justly separate me unto all evil, according to all the curses of the covenant, and blot out my name from under heaven. Deuteronomy 29:20(KJV)

Thou mightest justly swear in thy wrath that I should never enter into thy rest; Psalm 95:11(KJV) mightest justly set me naked and bare, Hosea 2:3(KJV) and take away my corn in the season thereof, Hosea 2:9(KJV) and put into my hands the cup of trembling, and make me drink even the dregs of that cup. Isaiah 51:17(KJV)

Thou art just in whatever thou art pleased to lay upon me; for thou hast done right, but I have done wickedly. Nehemiah 9:33(KJV) Nay, that my God has punished me less than my iniquities have deserved. Ezra 9:13(KJV)

Thou therefore shalt be justified when thou speakest and clear when thou judgest; Psalm 51:4(KJV) and I will accept of the punishment of my iniquity, Leviticus 26:43(KJV) and humble myself under thy mighty hand, 1 Peter 5:6(KJV) and say, The Lord is righteous. 2 Chronicles 12:6(KJV)

Wherefore should a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? Lamentations 3:39(KJV) No, I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him. Micah 7:9(KJV)

Consider your Evil Sins in Light of the Corrections you have Received and the Vows you have Made

Confession 2.17 | KJV

The greater afflictions I have been under for sin, the greater is the sin if I go on in it.

Thou hast stricken me, but I have not grieved; I have refused to receive correction and have made my face harder than a rock, Jeremiah 5:3(KJV) and the rod hath not driven the foolishness out of my heart. Proverbs 22:15(KJV)

Thou hast chastened me with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men, 2 Samuel 7:14(KJV) yet I have not turned to him that smiteth me, nor have I sought the Lord of hosts. Isaiah 9:13(KJV)

When some have been overthrown as Sodom and Gomorrah were, I have been as a brand plucked out of the fire; yet have I not returned unto thee, O Lord. Amos 4:11(KJV) And when thy hand has been lifted up, I have not seen it. Isaiah 26:11(KJV)

The more vows and promises I have made of better obedience, the greater has my sin been.

I have not performed the words of the covenant which I have made before thee; Jeremiah 34:18(KJV) but as a treacherous dealer, I have dealt treacherously. Isaiah 24:16(KJV)

Did I not say I would not transgress, Jeremiah 2:20(KJV) I would not offend any more? Job 34:31(KJV) I did, and yet I have returned with the dog to his vomit; 2 Peter 2:22(KJV) I have returned to folly after God hath spoken peace. Psalm 85:8(KJV)

Consider your Evil Sins in Light of the Mercies and Warnings of God

Confession 2.16 | KJV

The more mercies I have received from God, the greater has been my sin.

Thou hast nourished and brought me up as a child, but I have rebelled against thee. Isaiah 1:2(KJV)

I have ill requited thee, O Lord, as a foolish person and unwise: Thou art my Father that made me and bought me and established me, yet my spot has not been the spot of one of thy children. Deuteronomy 32:5-6(KJV)

I have not rendered again according to the benefit done unto me. 2 Chronicles 32:25(KJV)

The fairer warning I have had from the word of God and from my own conscience concerning my danger of sin and danger by sin, the greater is the sin if I go on in it.

I have been often reproved, and yet have hardened my neck, Proverbs 29:1(KJV) and have gone on frowardly in the way of my heart. Isaiah 57:17(KJV)

Thou hast sent to me, saying, O do not this abominable thing which I hate; but I have not hearkened nor inclined my ear. Jeremiah 44:4-5(KJV)

The word of God hath been to me precept upon precept and line upon line; Isaiah 28:13(KJV) and though I have beheld my natural face in the glass, yet I have gone away and straightway forgot what manner of man I am. James 1:23-24(KJV)

Consider your Evil Sins in Light of your Moral Knowledge and Profession of Faith

Confession 2.15 | KJV

I must aggravate* my sins and take notice of those things which make them more heinous in the sight of God and more dangerous to myself.

I bewail before thee all my sins and all my transgressions in all my sins. Leviticus 16:21(KJV)

The more knowledge I have of good and evil, the greater is my sin.

I have known my Master’s will but have not done it, and therefore deserve to be beaten with many stripes. Luke 12:47(KJV)

I have known the way of the Lord and the judgments of my God, and yet have altogether broken the yoke and burst the bonds. Jeremiah 5:4-5(KJV)

I have known the judgment of God, that they which do such things are worthy of death, and yet have done them and have had pleasure in them that do them. Romans 1:32(KJV)

I have taught others, and yet have not taught myself; Romans 2:21(KJV) and while I profess to know God, I have in works denied him. Titus 1:16(KJV)

The greater profession I have made of religion, the greater hath been my sin.

I call myself of the holy city and stay myself upon the God of Israel and make mention of his name, but not in truth and in righteousness. Isaiah 48:1-2(KJV) For I have dishonoured that worthy name by which I am called, James 2:23(KJV) and given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme. 2 Samuel 12:14(KJV)

I have named the name of Christ, and yet have not departed from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19(KJV)

* The author means that we must look at our sins in the worst light, to see just how evil they are, taking into account the persons we have offended, the nature of the offense, the circumstances of our sin, etc. See The Westminster Larger Catechism, Questions 150 and 151. Editor.

Confession 2.14 | KJV

By breaking the law I have dishonoured God, Romans 2:23(KJV) and have provoked the Holy One of Israel Isaiah 1:4(KJV) to anger most bitterly. Hosea 12:14(kJV) And many a thing that I have done hath displeased the Lord. 2 Samuel 11:27(KJV)

God has been broken by my whorish heart and my eyes that have gone a whoring after my idols. Ezekiel 6:9(KJV)

I have tempted him and proved him and grieved him in the wilderness; Psalm 95:9-10(KJV) have rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit, Isaiah 63:10(KJV) and pressed him with my iniquities, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves. Amos 2:13(KJV)

I have grieved the Holy Spirit of God, by whom I am sealed to the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30(KJV)

My sins have separated between me and God, Isaiah 59:2(KJV) and have kept good things from me; Jeremiah 5:25(KJV) and by them, my mind and conscience have been defiled. Titus 1:15(KJV)

My own wickedness hath corrected me, and backslidings have reproved me; and I cannot but know and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that I have forsaken the Lord my God, and that his fear hath not been in me. Jeremiah 2:19(KJV)

O what fools are they that make a mock at sin! Proverbs 14:9(KJV)

Acknowledge the Great Evil of Sin, its Unprofitableness and Deceitfulness

Confession 2.13 | KJV

The unprofitableness of sin.

I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not. Job 33:27(KJV)

What fruit have I now in these things whereof I have cause to be ashamed, seeing the end of those things is death? Romans 6:21(KJV) And what am I profited, if I should gain the whole world and lose my own soul? Matthew 16:26(KJV)

The deceitfulness of sin.

Sin hath deceived me, and by the commandment slain me; Romans 7:11(KJV) for my heart has been hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, Hebrews 3:13(KJV) and I have been drawn away of my own lust and enticed. James 1:14(KJV)

It has promised me liberty, but has made me the servant of corruption; 2 Peter 2:19(KJV) hath promised me that I shall not surely die and that I shall be as a god, Genesis 3:4-5(KJV) but it has flattered me and spread a net for my feet. Proverbs 29:5(KJV)

The pride of my heart, particularly, has deceived me. Obadiah 1:3(KJV)

Acknowledge the Great Evil of Sin, its Sinfulness and Foolishness

Confession 2.12 | KJV

I must acknowledge the great evil that there is in sin, and in my sin; the malignity of its nature, and its mischievousness to me.

The sinfulness of sin.

O that sin may appear sin to me, may appear in its own colours; and that by the commandment I may see it to be exceeding sinful, Romans 7:13(KJV) because it is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4(KJV)

By every willful sin I have in effect said, I will not have this man to reign over me. Luke 19:14(KJV) And, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice? Exodus 5:2(KJV) And thus have I reproached the Lord, Numbers 15:30(KJV) and cast his laws behind my back. Nehemiah 9:26(KJV)

The foolishness of sin.

O God, thou knowest my foolishness, and my sins are not hid from thee. Psalm 69:5(KJV) I was foolish in being disobedient, Titus 3:3(KJV) and my lusts are foolish and hurtful. 1 Timothy 6:9(KJV)

Foolishness was bound up in my heart when I was a child; Proverbs 22:15(KJV) for though vain man would be wise, he is born like the wild ass’s colt. Job 11:12(KJV)

My way hath been my folly, Psalm 49:13(KJV) and in many instances I have done foolishly. 2 Samuel 24:10(KJV)

So foolish have I been and ignorant, and even as a beast before God. Psalm 73:22(KJV)
