Acknowledge God’s Purity and Justice

Adoration 1.7 | NASB

That He is a God of unspotted purity and perfect rectitude.

You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel: Psalm 22:3(NASB) Holy and awesome is Your name, Psalm 111:9(NASB) and I give thanks to it. Psalm 30:4(NASB)

Your eyes are too pure to approve evil; Habakkuk 1:13(NASB) no evil dwells with You. Psalm 5:4(NASB)

You are the Rock! Your work is perfect, all Your ways are true and just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice. Deuteronomy 32:4(NASB) You are my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in You. Psalm 92:15(NASB)

You are righteous in all Your ways, Psalm 145:17(NASB) and holiness befits Your house, O LORD, forevermore. Psalm 93:5(NASB)

That He is just in the administration of His government, and never did, nor ever will do, wrong to any of his creatures.

Righteous are You, O God, that I would plead my case with You; Jeremiah 12:1(NASB) You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge. Psalm 51:4(NASB)

Far be it from God to do wickedness, and from the Almighty to do wrong; for He pays a man according to his work. Job 34:10-11(NASB)

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; Your judgments are like a great deep! Psalm 36:6(NASB) And though clouds and thick darkness surround You, yet righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne. Psalm 97:2(NASB)

Acknowledge God’s Incontestable Sovereignty and Irresistible Power

Adoration 1.6 | NASB

That His sovereignty is incontestable, and He is the owner and absolute Lord of all.

The heavens are Your heavens, Psalm 115:16(NASB) and all their hosts. The earth is Yours, and all it contains; the world, and those who dwell in it. Psalm 24:1(NASB) In Your hand are the depths of the earth, and the peaks of the mountains are Yours also. The sea is Yours, for it was You who made it, and Your hands formed the dry land: Psalm 95:4-5(NASB) Every beast of the forest is Yours, the cattle on a thousand hills. Psalm 50:10(NASB) You are therefore a great God and a great King above all gods. Psalm 95:3(NASB)

In Your hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10(NASB)

Your dominion is an everlasting dominion, and Your kingdom endures from generation to generation: You do according to Your will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off Your hand or say to You, “What have You done?” Daniel 4:34-35(NASB) or “Why are You doing that?”

That His power is irresistible, and the operations of it cannot be controlled.

I know, O God, that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. Job 42:2(NASB) Power belongs to You; Psalm 62:11(NASB) and with You nothing is impossible. Luke 1:37(NASB)

All authority is Yours, both in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18(NASB)

You put to death and give life; You have wounded, and it is You who heal, and there is no one who can deliver from Your hand. Deuteronomy 32:39(NASB)

What You have promised, You are able also to perform. Romans 4:21(NASB)

Recognize God’s Perfect Knowledge and Unsearchable Wisdom

Adoration 1.5 | NASB

That He has a perfect knowledge of all persons and things, and sees them all, even that which is most secret, at one clear, certain, and unerring view.

All things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom I have to do, even the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12-13(NASB)

Your eyes are in every place, watching the evil and the good: Proverbs 15:3(NASB) They move to and fro throughout the earth that You may strongly support those whose hearts are completely Yours. 2 Chronicles 16:9(NASB)

You search the heart and test the mind, so that You may give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. Jeremiah 17:10(NASB)

O God, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thoughts from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all my ways: Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O LORD, You know it all. Psalm 139:1-4(NASB) Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it. Psalm 139:6(NASB)

Darkness and light are alike to You. Psalm 139:12(NASB)

That His wisdom is unsearchable, and the counsels and designs of it cannot be fathomed.

Your understanding, O Lord, is infinite, for You count the number of the stars and give names to all of them. Psalm 147:4-5(NASB)

You have made Your counsel wonderful and Your wisdom great; Isaiah 28:29(NASB) You are wise in heart and mighty in strength. Job 9:4(NASB)

O LORD, how many are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all; Psalm 104:24(NASB) all according to the counsel of Your will. Ephesians 1:11(NASB)

Oh, the depth of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! Romans 11:33 (NASB)

Acknowledge God’s Eternality and Omnipresence

Adoration 1.4 | NASB

Particularly in my adorations I must acknowledge:

That He is an eternal God, immutable, without beginning of days or end of life or change of time.

You are the King eternal, immortal, invisible. 1 Timothy 1:17(NASB)

Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God; Psalm 90:2(NASB) the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8(NASB)

Of old You founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. Even they will perish, but You endure; and all of them will wear out like a garment; like clothing You will change them and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not come to an end. Psalm 102:25-27(NASB)

You, O God, do not change; therefore is it that I am not consumed. Malachi 3:6(NASB)

Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? Habakkuk 1:12(NASB) The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, who does not become weary or tired; Your understanding is inscrutable. Isaiah 40:28(NASB)

That He is present in all places, and there is no place in which He is not included or out of which he is excluded.

You are a God who is near and not a God far off; no man can hide himself in hiding places so that You do not see him, for You fill the heavens and the earth. Jeremiah 23:23-24(NASB)

You are not far from each one of us. Acts 17:27(NASB)

I cannot go anywhere from Your presence or flee from Your Spirit: If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, in the depths of the earth, behold, You are there; if I take the wings of the dawn and dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will lay hold of me, Psalm 139:7-10(NASB) for I cannot outrun You.

Reverently Adore God, Part 2

Adoration 1.3 | NASB

I must acknowledge His Being to be unquestionable and past dispute.

The heavens are telling of Your glory, O God, and their expanse is declaring the work of Your hands; Psalm 19:1(NASB) and Your eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen and understood through what has been made. Romans 1:19-20(NASB) So that they are fools without excuse who say, “There is no God”; Psalm 14:1(NASB) for surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth, Psalm 58:11(NASB) and in heaven too!

I therefore come to You believing that You are and that You are the powerful and bountiful rewarder of those who seek You. Hebrews 11:6(NASB)

Yet I must own His nature to be incomprehensible.

I cannot discover the depths of God; I cannot discover the limits of the Almighty. Job 11:7(NASB)

Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. Psalm 145:3(NASB)

Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the LORD? Or can show forth all His praise? Psalm 106:2(NASB)

And His perfections to be matchless and without compare.

Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders? Exodus 15:11(NASB)

Who in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD? Psalm 89:6(NASB) O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. Psalm 89:8(NASB)

There is no one like You among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like Yours. Psalm 86:8(NASB) For You are great and do wondrous deeds; You alone are God. Psalm 86:10(NASB)

No creature has an arm like God, or can thunder with a voice like His. Job 40:9(NASB)

And that He is infinitely above us and all other beings.

You are God and not man; You do not have eyes of flesh, nor do You see as a man sees. Your days are not as the days of a mortal, nor your years as man’s years. Job 10:4-5(NASB)

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are Your thoughts higher than my thoughts, and Your ways than my ways. Isaiah 55:9(NASB)

All the nations before You are like a drop from the bucket, or a speck of dust on the scales; and You lift up the islands like fine dust; Isaiah 40:15(NASB) they are as nothing, and are regarded by You as less than nothing and meaningless. Isaiah 40:17(NASB)

Reverently Adore God, Part 1

Adoration 1.2 | NASB

I must reverently adore God, as a Being transcendently bright and blessed, self-existent and self-sufficient, an infinite and eternal Spirit who has all perfections in Himself, and give Him the glory of His titles and attributes.

O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering Yourself with light as with a cloak; Psalm 104:1-2(NASB) and yet to me you make darkness Your hiding place, Psalm 18:11(NASB) for I cannot arrange my case because of darkness. Job 37:19(NASB)

This is the message that I have heard from you, and I set my seal to it that it is true: God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all; 1 John 1:5(NASB) God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 1 John 4:16(NASB)

You are the Father of light, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow, and from whom proceeds every good thing and every perfect gift. James 1:17(NASB)

You are the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alones possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. 1 Timothy 6:15-16(NASB)

Address God with Reverence and Awe

Adoration 1.1 | NASB

Having thus engaged my heart to approach God. Jeremiah 30:21(NASB)

I must solemnly address myself to that infinitely great and glorious Being with whom I have to do, as one who is possessed with a full belief of His presence and a holy awe and reverence of His Majesty, which I may do in such expressions as these:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come! Revelation 4:8(NASB)

O You alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth. Psalm 83:18(NASB)

O God, You are my God; I will seek you earnestly; Psalm 63:1(NASB) my God, and I will praise You; my fathers’ God, and I will extol You. Exodus 15:2(NASB)

O You who are the true God, the living God, the one only living and true God, 1 Thessalonians 1:9(NASB) and the everlasting King! Jeremiah 10:10(NASB) With your redeemed people I confess your great name: “The LORD is my God, the LORD is one!” Deuteronomy 6:4(NASB)

And may I thus distinguish myself from the worshipers of false gods.

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, they are vanity and a lie, the work of man’s hands; Psalm 115:4(NASB) those who make them will become like them, everyone who trusts in them. Psalm 115:8(NASB) But the portion of Jacob is not like these, for the Maker of all is He, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the LORD of hosts is His name; Jeremiah 10:16(NASB) God over all, blessed forevermore. Romans 9:5(NASB)

Their rock is not like my Rock, even the enemies themselves judge this; Deuteronomy 32:31(NASB) for he is the Rock of ages, GOD the LORD, who is an everlasting Rock, Isaiah 26:4(NASB) whose name is everlasting and whose remembrance is to all generations, Psalm 135:13(NASB) when the gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.

Introduction to Adoration

Adoration 1.0 | NASB

Of the First Part of Prayer, which is Address to God, Adoration of Him, with Suitable Acknowledgements, Professions, and Preparatory Requests.

My spirit being composed into a very reverent and serious frame, my thoughts gathered in, and all that is within me charged in the Name of the great God carefully to attend the solemn and awful service that lies before me and to keep close to it, I must, with a fixed attention and application of mind and an active lively faith, set the Lord before me, see His eye upon me, and set myself in His special presence, presenting myself to Him as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which I desire may be my spiritual service of worship; Romans 12:1(NASB) and then bind this festal sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar, Romans 118:27(NASB) in such thoughts as these:

Let me now lift up my heart, with my eyes and hands, toward God in heaven. Lamentations 3:41(NASB)

Let me arouse myself to take hold of God, Isaiah 64:7(NASB) to seek his face, Psalm 27:8(NASB) and to ascribe to Him the glory due to His name. Psalm 29:2(NASB)

To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. Psalm 25:1(NASB)

Let me now with humble confidence enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, in the new and living way which He inaugurated for me through the veil, that is, His flesh. Hebrews 10:19-20(NASB)

Let me now secure undistracted devotion to the Lord, 1 Corinthians 7:35(NASB) and let not my heart be far from Him when I draw near to Him with my words and honor him with my lips. Isaiah 29:13(NASB)

Let me now worship God, who is spirit, in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. John 4:23-24(NASB)

Sum up your Prayer with the Lord’s Prayer

Conclusion 6.5 | NASB

It is very proper to sum up my prayers in that form of prayer which Christ taught His disciples.

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. Matthew 6:9-13(NASB)

Now blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting, Amen and Amen. Psalm 41:13(NASB)

Forever blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone works wonders, and blessed be His glorious name forever, and may the whole earth be filled with His glory, Amen and Amen. Psalm 72:18-19(NASB) Yes, let all the people say, “Amen. Praise the LORD!” Psalm 106:48(NASB)

To the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever, Amen. Romans 16:27(NASB)

Now to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, be the glory forevermore, Amen. Galatians 1:3-5(NASB)

To God be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever, Amen. Ephesians 3:21(NASB)

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever, Amen: 1 Timothy 1:17(NASB) To him be honor and eternal dominion; 1 Timothy 6:16(NASB) to Him be glory and dominion, Amen. 1 Peter 5:11(KJV)

Now to Him who is able to keep us from stumbling, and to make us stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, now and forever, Amen. Jude 1:24-25(NASB)

Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God! Revelation 19:1(NASB) Amen. Hallelujah! Revelation 19:4(NASB)

And now, we prostrate our souls before the throne and worship God, saying, “Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to God forever and ever, Amen. Revelation 7:11-12(NASB) To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever”; Revelation 5:13(NASB) and let the whole creation say, “Amen. Amen.”
