Matthew Henry’s “Method For Prayer”

Plead with God the Merit and Righteousness of Jesus Christ

Petition 3.3 | KJV

The merit and righteousness of my Lord Jesus Christ, which I rely upon as my main plea in my petition for the pardon of sin.

I know that as thou art gracious and merciful, so thou art the righteous God that loveth righteousness, Psalm 11:7(KJV) and wilt by no means clear the guilty. Exodus 34:7(KJV) I cannot say, Have patience with me and I will pay thee all, Matthew 18:26(KJV) for I am as an unclean thing, and all my righteousness is as filthy rags. Isaiah 64:6(KJV) But Jesus Christ is made of God to me righteousness; 1 Corinthians 1:30(KJV) being made sin for me, though he knew no sin, that I might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21(KJV)

I have sinned, but I have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, who is the propitiation for my sins, and not for mine only, but for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2(KJV)

It is God that justifieth, who is he that shall condemn? It is Christ that died, yea, rather that is risen again and now is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for me, Romans 8:33-34(KJV) and whose blood speaks better things than that of Abel. Hebrews 12:24(KJV)

I desire to count every thing loss for Christ, and dung, that I may win Christ and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own, but that which is through the faith of Christ. Philippians 3:7-9(KJV)

This is the name whereby I, with your people, will call him, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Jeremiah 23:6(KJV) In him, Lord, I believe; help thou my own unbelief. Mark 9:24(KJV)

Lord, remember David and all his troubles; Psalm 132:1(KJV) the Son of David, remember all his offerings and accept his burnt sacrifice; Psalm 20:3(KJV) and turn not away the face of thine Anointed, 2 Chronicles 6:42(KJV) who by his own blood is entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for me. Hebrews 9:24(KJV)

Hast not thou thyself set forth thy Son, Christ Jesus, to be a propitiation for sin through faith in his blood, to declare thy righteousness for the remission of sins, to declare at this time thy righteousness, that thou mayest be just and the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus? Romans 3:25-26(KJV) And I now receive the atonement. Romans 5:11(KJV)
