Matthew Henry’s “Method For Prayer”

Pray for the Fear of God and for the Love of God to be Rooted in you

Petition 3.20 | KJV

I must pray for the fear of God.

Lord, work in me that fear of thee, which is the beginning of wisdom, Psalm 111:10(KJV) which is the instruction of wisdom, Proverbs 15:33(KJV) and which is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27(KJV)

Unite my heart to fear thy name, Psalm 86:11(KJV) that I may keep thy commandments, which is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13(KJV)

O put thy fear into my heart, that I may never depart from thee. Jeremiah 32:40(KJV) Let me be devoted to thy fear; Psalm 119:38(KJV) and let me be in the fear of the Lord every day and all the day long. Proverbs 23:17(KJV)

I must pray that the love of God and Christ may be rooted in me and, in order thereunto, that the love of the world may be rooted out of me.

Give me grace, I beseech thee, to love thee, the Lord my God, with all my heart and soul and mind and might, Mark 12:30(KJV) which is the first and great commandment; Matthew 22:37-38(KJV) to set my love upon thee; Psalm 91:14(KJV) and to delight myself always in thee; and therein I shall have the desires of my heart. Psalm 37:4(KJV)

Circumcise my heart to love thee, the Lord my God, with all my heart and with all my soul, that I may live. Deuteronomy 30:6(KJV)

O that the love of God may be shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost. Romans 5:5(KJV)

O that Jesus Christ may be very precious to me, as he is to all that believe; 1 Peter 2:7(KJV) that he may be in my account the chiefest of ten thousand and altogether lovely; Song of Solomon 5:10(KJV) and that he may be my beloved and my friend: Song of Solomon 5:16(KJV) That though I have not seen him, yet I may love him; and though I now see him not, yet believing, I may rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. 1 Peter 1:8(KJV)

Let the love of Christ to me constrain me to live, not to myself, but to him that died for me and rose again. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15(KJV)

And, Lord, grant that I may not love the world nor the things that are in the world, because if any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him; 1 John 2:15(KJV) that I may set my affections on things above, and not on things that are on the earth. Colossians 3:2(KJV)
